Long Beach is located along the coast of southern California. Although it is not exactly a beach town, it has a long history as a tourist destination. This community has played a major role in shaping the world's modern culture. Lush oaks, palm trees and a tropical climate attract a multitude of tourists each year. In recent years, however, the sleepy community surrounding the quaint fishing harbor has changed dramatically.
Long Beach is often incorrectly referred to as a "sin city," even though it is not filled with immoral or notorious people. Rather, this coastal community is filled with artists, writers, musicians and other creative people. Many writers and artists call Long Beach home, including former First Lady Hillary Clinton and actor Arnold Schwarzenegger. The port of Queensway Bay is where moored ocean liners leave for Southern California destinations such as Los Angeles, San Diego and Orange County.
The area is sprinkled with a number of historical landmarks. Among these notable sites is the Long Beach Memorial Park, designed by landscape architect Frederick Law Olmstead, which contains a trio of civil war statues. Additionally, the park includes a lighthouse, train station and several museums.
Long Beach is filled with world-class restaurants and cafes. One of these restaurants is Jack's Place, a diner that has entertained celebrities and local dignitaries for decades. Another Long Beach landmark is the Los Angeles Sports Club, which features an indoor tennis court, pool and lavish facilities for playing tennis, volleyball and racquetball. The L.A. LIVE! Ballpark, which is home to the L.A. Dodgers, is also located nearby.
If you are interested in learning about Long Beach's history, the city has plenty of historical landmarks for your exploration. In addition to visiting the aforementioned museums, the Seaport Village Historical Society and Museum will guide you to some of Long Beach's first homes and commercial properties. A number of buildings from the Gold Rush era can be explored at the Historic Gaslight Building, which once operated as a gas station for mining operations during the late nineteenth century. Another favorite attraction is the Seaport Village, which showcases photos of Long Beach during various seasons and showcases an authentic-sized replica of an old ocean liner.
Although Long Beach is not exactly a party town, many of its tourists enjoy drinking and eating at local restaurants. There are also plenty of hotels, motels and beach resorts to offer guests, so staying in style is not a concern. In fact, many Long Beach hotels feature features that will make tourists feel like they are on the set of a movie, complete with TVs, fireplaces and jacuzzis.Member Spotlight
